CARLTON TOWNHOUSE
Sometimes by circumstance or budget, a building doesn’t afford us the luxury to demolish or rearrange rooms. This was the case for this townhouse, where some rooms were small and awkwardly shaped.
In such situations, our advice is to embrace and even celebrate the unique oddities these restrictions create. You might find yourself passing through a window to access the balcony or navigating through one room to reach another. Although, not ideal, they can become delightful peculiarities. To deal with confined spaces you need to adjust your mindset. To live in small places, you need to learn how to live small. Untangle yourself from so much and treasure the few.
This property serves as a retail shopfront in the vibrant, trendy Carlton suburb. The clients aimed to create a multifunctional space on the ground floor—a gallery during the day, a private event space in the evening, or an extension of their living room when guests visit.
The remaining bedrooms, bathrooms and conservatory were transformed from drab to chic by use of striking colours and textures.
